Shillong gasps for Air Supply
- Australian band to perform in Meghalaya capital this Sunday

Shillong, May 8: If it?s music, count on Shillong to be excited.

After scintillating performances by American rockers Firehouse, gospel specialists Petra and the Danish boy band Michael Learns To Rock, there is a sense of expectation in the air again with another international group set to rock the Meghalaya capital.

This Sunday, Australian pop act Air Supply will perform live at the sprawling Jawaharlal Nehru Sports Complex. Shillong is the only place in eastern India where the band will performing during its tour of the country.

The Air Supply concert has been organised by Mumbai-based Planman Life and its Guwahati-based partner, Speedstakes.

The organisers expect thousands of music fans from across eastern India to throng the stadium, which has hosted several concerts over the past couple of years.

Air Supply consists of Graham Russell and Russell Hitchcock, who came together in 1975 and have since been a major presence in the international music scene. The duo?s best-selling albums include The Book of Love (1997), Yours Truly (2001), Across the Concrete Sky (2003) and It was 30 Years Ago Today (2005).

Air Supply will begin their short India tour with a concert in New Delhi on Thursday and move on to Bangalore for another show the very next day. After the Shillong gig, the duo will leave for Hong Kong, where they are scheduled to launch a new album, The Singer and the Song, on May 20.

Though the two Australians will be visiting Shillong for the first time, their compositions have always been popular in this part of the world. Hitchcock?s ?soaring tenor voice? and Graham?s ?simple yet majestic songs? combine to create Air Supply?s trademark sound and songs like Making Love Out of Nothing and Lost in Love have been on their fans? lips since the early eighties.

?It feels nice to have been able to bring such a popular band here. We have launched a big publicity campaign to ensure a sellout concert,? said L.J. Mukhim, media relations officer of Speedstakes.

Going by the messages on their official website, the Air Supply duo is just as excited. ?We are finally going to tour India. All that wonderful food and fantastic people, I cannot wait,? the website quotes Graham, who is a vocalist and guitarist.

Firehouse and Petra performed in Shillong in 2004 and Michael Learns To Rock, aka MLTR, last year.
