Mahindra beat Sporting to move on top

Panaji: Mahindra United sustained second half pressure as they scored a 1-0 win over Sporting Clube de Goa to move to the top of the table in the ONGC National Football League here on Friday.

S. Venkatesh scored the winner in the stoppage time of the first-half.

Mahindra United now have 29 points from 13 matches, displacing East Bengal who have 28 points from 14 matches. Sporting Clube de Goa remained on fifth place with 19 points from 12 matches.

Defender Mahesh Gawli was adjudged the Man of the Match. Both teams started positively as they attacked each other’s citadel, but both missed clear chances.

Mahindra, who missed two close chances through strikers Yusif Yakubu and Jose Ramirez Baretto took the lead in the stoppage time of the first half.

Yakubu, from the left, sent a cross inside the box to Sushant Mathew, who in turn relayed the ball to unmark S. Venkatesh who fired home from close. (PTI)
