Jamshedpur, April 28: Flight services resumed at the Sonari airport today, about 36 hours after a six-seater Tata Steel aircraft, carrying top Tata officials back from Calcutta, skidded off the runway late Wednesday evening.
Six passengers, including the company?s vice-president (flat products) Anand Sen, Tinplate Company of India managing director B.L. Raina and a senior official from Tata Centre, Calcutta, Jimmy Gandevia, were on board. Five of them had sustained minor injures and were admitted to the Tata Main Hospital.
The airport became operational and a flight from Delhi landed in the evening after the damaged aircraft, which was stationed near the runway, was carried away with a crane, Three wheels of the aircraft, Kingair C-90, had broken down and one of its wings, besides its nose, was damaged.
Earlier in the morning, a team from the director general of civil aviation?s regional office, in Calcutta, (DGCA) inspected the aircraft and looked into possible reasons behind the mishap.
According to sources, another team from the DGCA will arrive at the steel city tomorrow morning to conduct a final inspection and ascertain the cause behind the incident.
Meanwhile, the police have begun a probe and have lodged two separate cases in the incident. In one of the FIRs lodged by subinspector R.K. Bara of Sonari police station, the police have blamed Captain A.K. Sinha and his assistant Captain B.B. Ray for their careless flight in adverse weather conditions. In another FIR, the police have alleged that the aerodrome authorities had prevented them from entering into the aerodrome and discharging their duties.
Subinspector Sudhir Kumar, who is investigating into the cases, told The Telegraph that he has asked the airport authorities to furnish the names of those who were on duty while the accident occurred.
