Malda, April 21: Sabhadhipati of the zilla parishad and Congress leader Gautam Chakrabarty's name has been deleted from the electoral rolls of Milky village in the Englishbazar constituency. According to Election Commission regulations regarding leaders with security, Chakrabarty must leave Malda 72 hours before the district goes to polls.
Experts believe that the zilla parishad may now be hard-pressed to explain how Chakrabarty can hold on to his post despite his name not featuring in the voters' list.
Chakrabarty's party was dealt another blow when it emerged that Trinamul Congress leader-turned Congress candidate for the Englishbazar constituency Krishnendu Chowdhury tops the list of political leaders with criminal cases and warrants pending against them. The CPM yesterday faxed a message to the commission listing all the cases pending against Chowdhury.
'There are as many as 24 criminal cases against him.' district secretary of the CPM Jiban Moitra said.
Chowdhury was not available for comment. On the other hand, Chakrabarty said: 'I am yet to see the revised voters' list. So I cannot say for certain if my name is in it.'
Subdivisional officer Prasanna Mondal said the sabhadhipati's name had been deleted on the basis of specific complaints followed by an inquiry.
