Any Questions
Devi Kar
Principal, Modern High School for Girls, Calcutta

Q: I want to study engineering at the Manipal Institute of Technology. Since I am a girl, my parents say that if I get any branch other than computers or electronics and telecommunication, they won’t send me there. Is it true that the other branches are not suitable for girls?

Name withheld

A: Although some branches of engineering are more in demand than the others, the training that one gets in any field of engineering is extremely valuable and opens up innumerable career options. As far as I know, women who have opted for engineering are doing well in general, irrespective of their branch of study. .

Q: I have got admitted to a law college under Calcutta University. I want to pursue a career in law. But my parents say that nowadays there is no future in law. I am very confused. Please help.

Soumi Guha Thakurta, Calcutta

A: I wonder why your parents think that law has no future. In fact, it is one of the most sought-after professions today. The growth of industry, commerce and technology has increased the demand for lawyers and opened up new areas of specialisation. Apart from practising law as advocates or solicitors or as employees of law firms, lawyers are much in demand in government and corporate sectors and even in social service organisations. If you study well, work hard and have a sound legal brain, you will have a great future in the legal profession.
