Court prod to construct abattoir

Ranchi, April 17: Jharkhand High Court today directed the state to immediately construct a slaughterhouse on the selected site in the city.

The division bench of Justices S.J. Mukhopadhaya and M.Y.Eqbal ordered the urban development department secretary R.K. Srivastava to coordinate with the finance department, Ranchi Municipal Corporation, Ranchi deputy commissioner and state pollution control board for construction of the abattoir.

The court, while hearing a PIL filed by Syed Naushad on illegal slaughterhouses, was annoyed at the lackadaisical approach of the government which has been stalling the matter for over two years. In the last hearing, the counsel for the state informed the court that the animal husbandry department has been asked to construct the slaughterhouse. However, the department said that it was incompetent to undertake the construction. The government has been asked to file a status report in the matter on May 17.
