Grenade attack on MP house
- Manipur leader targeted for showing ?disrespect? to outfit

Imphal, April 11: A fledgling militant outfit today claimed responsibility for the grenade attack on Manipur?s Lok Sabha MP from the Outer constituency, Mani Charenamei?s Imphal residence, on Saturday.

Police recovered an unexploded hand grenade from the campus of the MP?s private residence at Imphal?s Chingmeirong neighbourhood late Saturday night. The grenade was hurled from the gate, it is believed.

This is the second attack on the MP?s house in the past 10 months.

Owning up to the attack, a caller identifying himself as Kadison Pamei, self-styled chief of army of the Zeliangrong Revolutionary National Front (ZRNF), told an Imphal-based daily over phone today that the MP?s house was attacked because he had shown disrespect to the outfit.

The caller said the MP had ignored some of the group?s proposals for development projects for the Zeliangrong community and its request for some help. ?If the MP does not change his stand, more attacks will come,? the caller warned.

Charenamei was at home when the grenade was thrown. He, however, left Imphal for Delhi the next day. He was not available for comment.

The attack was condemned strongly by various Naga organisations, including Zeliangrong Union, an apex body of the tribal community in Manipur, Assam and Nagaland, and the United Naga Council.

In separate statements, the two tribal organisations condemned the grenade attack, saying if any group had differences with the MP, those should have been sorted out amicably.

On June 23 last year, members belonging to the NSCN (K) had hurled a bomb at the MP?s house, which, fortunately, had also failed to explode.

The NSCN (K) had accused the MP of working as a ?representative? of the rival NSCN (I-M). Charenamei, a Zeliangrong Naga from Tamenglong district, is known for his strong support for the integration of all Naga-inhabited areas under one administrative unit, a demand put forward by the NSCN (I-M) during the ongoing peace talks with the Centre.

The ZRNF, under the leadership of one K.S. Guangsilung, surfaced on July 27 last year. The outfit vowed to fight against what it termed as ?designs? of the NSCN(I-M) to ?drive a wedge? between communities living in Manipur.

Both factions of the NSCN had accused one another of forming the new group. The NSCN (K) launched a manhunt and claimed to have apprehended a member of the new group four days after the outfit surfaced.

Naga organisations have urged the Manipur government to strengthen the security of the MP in view of the frequent attacks.
