Ranchi, April 11: Jharkhand does not need an agriculture policy, but requires a ?farmer-friendly? polity, was the unanimous opinion of the delegates at a seminar organised by the Centre for World Solidarity (CWS) and Sukhad Virodhi Abhiyan here.
Some of the delegates said they had visited many villages and interacted with numerous farmers before arriving at the conclusion that ?the state?s farmers should be encouraged to implement traditional farming methods using bio-fertilisers?.
The agrarians had said the state?s agriculture policy was not favouring their aspirations, they added at the two-day seminar that concluded today.
The joint-director of CWS, Manimoy Sinha, said: ?We do not need an agriculture policy, for it has so far been devoid of the aspirations and grassroots requirements of farmers. So we need a farmer-friendly policy, which takes into account the needs and aspirations of the farmers.?
He claimed that his organisation had conducted field surveys and found that a large chunk of farmers in Jharkhand could not afford tractors and hybrid seeds, which requires chemical fertilisers and proper water availability.
?The poor farmers cannot afford costly chemical fertilisers ?. the state lacks canals and check dams,? he said, pointing out the importance of traditional farming practices
Members of many NGOs, social organisations and some government officials, too, attended the seminar.
