Office under sting siege

Bhubaneswar, April 11: The honeybees that had virtually laid siege to the Kendrapara block office on Saturday have apparently pacified with no fresh cases of stings reported today.

The block office was closed as today was a government holiday.

On Saturday, the bees went on the rampage after their hive was disturbed by a horde of monkeys.

The winged creatures injured more than a dozen people, including two government employees, and paralysed official work.

The situation is under control although the hive has not been completely destroyed, said Kendrapara collector Jyoti Prakash Das. ?It?s a natural formation and I did not think it proper to disturb it.?

The marauding honeybees were driven away by fire and forest personnel. They had made a hive measuring more than 2 ft in length at the top of a tree near the block office entrance.

The bees came rushing out after some monkeys disturbed their abode. They stung pedestrians and those making way to the office.

The injured included two block office employees and a minor girl.

The staff and public remained indoors as no one dared to venture out fearing the sting. Those who spent the night in the office left the building on Sunday morning after scaling a wall.

Traffic movement was on the Kendrapara-Gandakia road was also disrupted.

The injured were discharged after first-aid, said Shantanu Das, inspector-in-charge of Kendrapara police station.
