Showcause for boycott flout
The Calcutta High Court Bar Association on Monday issued showcause notices to six of its members for their alleged violation of the group?s resolution asking lawyers not to attend the chief justice?s court for a day. The association had decided on the boycott after Chief Justice V.S. Sirpurkar allegedly refused to meet a delegation of senior members.
he members went to the chief justice to discuss some of the problems faced by the lawyers. Some members of the Democratic Lawyers? Association, however, violated the resolution.
Forensic visit
A forensic team on Monday visited a house in Metiabruz where a woman and a boy were killed in an explosion of a gas cylinder on Sunday night. Police said the team had collected samples from the house. The condition of the injured, admitted to various hospitals, is improving.
Rape charge
Two men were arrested on charges of raping a 13-year-old in Taratala on Sunday night. Police said the accused ? Ashoke Satnani and Swapan Pandey ? were residents of the Brace Bridge area. They allegedly raped the victim, who lives in a shanty, when she went to a public urinal.
Arms arrest
An arms smuggler was arrested near Ballygunge station on Sunday night. Sources in the Government Railway Police said the man, identified as Dudh Kumar, was moving suspiciously in the area. A revolver and a dozen cartridges were seized from him.
Train services hit
Train services on the South and Main sections of Sealdah were disrupted for several hours on Monday morning after overhead wires snapped at Bidhannagar and Champahati stations. The disruption continued till noon.
Hospital trouble
Trouble broke out at Panihati State General Hospital, on the northern fringes of the city, on Monday morning after a 26-year-old patient, Tanushree Chakrabarty, died. Tanushree?s relatives went on a rampage, alleging negligence of the hospital authorities. She had been suffering from diarrhoea. Hospital superintendent Jayati Chowdhury denied the charges of negligence, but said a probe would be ordered.
Plea turned down
Calcutta High Court on Monday turned down US-based doctor Kunal Saha?s plea for an urgent hearing of his appeal against the trial court order, upholding a decision of the state medical council. The council had acquitted three doctors ? Sukumar Mukherjee, Abani Roy Chowdhury and Baidyanath Haldar ? of charges of wrong treatment leading to the death of Saha?s wife Anuradha.
aha?s counsel argued before the division bench presided over by Chief Justice V.S. Sirpurkar that the matter be treated as urgent as his client would leave for the US soon. But the bench ruled that the doctor need not be present during the hearing.
Party protest
Trinamul Congress supporters on Monday afternoon organised a demonstration at Bally police station, alleging that some ?hooligans? were preventing them from erecting a stage for a rally scheduled to be attended by Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday. The protesters relented after being assured by police that the complaint would be looked into.
Godown fire
A fire broke out at a godown on JN Mukherjee Road, under Malipanchghara police station in Howrah, on Monday evening. Electrical gadgets were stored in the godown. Two tenders took one-and-a-half hours to douse the blaze.
