Tussle over bank funds sparks clash
- Four injured in fight

Ranchi, April 9: Around four people belonging to different groups were admitted to Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) after they were injured in a clash over withdrawal of money from an account that was created for a mentally-challenged woman.

The incident took place at around 2:30 pm in Doria Basti under Jagannathpur police station.

However, no arrests have so far been made in this regard. Neither have FIRs been lodged.

However, the four injured ? Karma Mahto, Mantu Mahto, Runiya Devi and Musu Linda, residents of Doria Basti ? are out of danger, according to hospital sources.

Both the groups attacked each other with sharp-edged weapons and lathis, eyewitnesses said.

According to Jagannathpur police station officer-in-charge Satyavir Singh, there was a particular plot in the area that was purchased in the name of a mentally-challenged woman called Muni Devi.

Some years ago, her mother had employed a chowkidar called Ganga Mahto, a distant relative of the family, to take care of the land as she was unable to look after the property alone.

She had also created a fixed deposit of Rs 1 lakh, sharing the account with Mahto, in the Hatia branch of State Bank of India, Singh said. It is not clear why the account was shared with the chowkidar and whether the money had any connection with the land.

Trouble started when Mahto, who has been taking care of the land for some years now, recently withdrew Rs 50,000 from the joint account without the consent of Devi, whose mother had died.

Devi?s relatives objected to the withdrawal and shot a missive to the manager of Hatia branch of the SBI urging him not to allow Mahto to further withdraw money from the joint account.

Thereafter, tension started brewing between two groups, finally causing today?s clash.

Singh further alleged that Mahto had also talked to some local people who had supported his move to withdraw the money.

On the other hand, the relatives of Devi claimed that though Mahto had taken care of the land for so many years, he did not have any right over the money, which belonged to Devi since her mother?s death.
