Minors rescued in sleaze bust

A prostitution racket involving minor girls was busted in the city on Tuesday evening. Five girls, aged between 13 and 16, were rescued by officers of the detective department from a hotel on Park Street. Five women and four men were arrested. Deputy commissioner (detective department) Gyanwant Singh said an officer, posing as a Mumbai-based businessman, contacted Raju, the kingpin, and asked him to bring the girls to the hotel. aju had allegedly asked for Rs 2 lakh to provide the girls for a night. A deal was fixed and around 5 pm, Raju, accompanied by a woman, brought the girls to the hotel in a taxi, said Singh. The rescued girls are from the city and its suburbs and belong to poor families. Interrogation has revealed that the nine, including Raju, are residents of Burtola and had been running the racket for the past one-and-a-half years.

Dogs off Memorial

Calcutta High Court on Tuesday directed the Victoria Memorial Hall authorities to drive out stray dogs from the compound. A morning walker had recently been bitten by one.

Shop fire

A fire broke out in an electrical goods store in Old China Bazar Street, in central Calcutta, on Tuesday morning. Fire brigade authorities said three tenders controlled the blaze in two hours. No was injured. The cause of the fire could not be determined.

Water shortage

Inmates of Alipore Central jail had to face shortage of drinking water on Tuesday after the deep tubewell on the premises broke down. Drinking water had to be procured from outside.

Flyover launch

The Bondel Gate flyover will be ready around Poila Baisakh, public works department minister Amar Choudhury said on Tuesday. The flyover will be opened to public without fanfare, as the model code of conduct related to polls is in force.

Civic panels

Mayor Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharyya formed two committees on Tuesday to monitor the construction of highrises in the city and protect the waterbodies. The committee to monitor the construction of highrises includes representatives of the Calcutta Municipal Corporation, fire brigade, city police and the Confederation of Indian Industry. The other panel will consist of the director-general (building) and a representative of the state pollution control board.

Abduction bail

Calcutta High Court on Tuesday granted bail to Sibaprasad Pathak, a driver who was arrested in connection with Mini Kanodia?s abduction in December last year. Pathak?s counsel argued that his client was in no way involved in the conspiracy, and had been hired to drive the abductors? car.

Plea rejected

The high court on Tuesday rejected the bail plea of Arup Kumar Gupta, a former manager of State Bank of India?s foreign exchange section in Calcutta. He was arrested for opening an NRI bank account of Rs 50 lakh by submitting forged documents. He had himself verified the papers.
