Meet fixes CAS roll-out schedule

Conditional access system (CAS) will be rolled out in the four metros within ?220 days? of the implementation notification. This was decided at a meeting between officials of the information and broadcasting ministry and representatives of broadcasters, multi-system operators, cable operators and other ?stakeholders? in Delhi on Monday. It was decided that there would be a phased roll-out of CAS, similar to what had been suggested in the July 2003 notification. For Calcutta, Phase I had then included areas like Behala and Budge Budge. onday?s meeting also decided that broadcasters would provide a la carte pricing for their channels right from the beginning. ollowing Delhi High Court?s March 10 directive on implementing CAS in the four metros within four weeks, the Centre has been conducting a series of meetings with industry ?stakeholders?. The next meeting is scheduled for April 7.

Indian number

The new toll-free number of Indian (airline), for passengers calling from MTNL/BSNL telephones, is 1800 180 1407. The earlier number was 1600 180 1407. Mobile users can reach the Indian call centre by dialling 1407, pre-fixed by the STD code of any of the six metros ? Delhi, Mumbai, Calcutta, Chennai, Bangalore and Hyderabad ? depending on which office the call is being routed to.

Woman rescued

A 40-year-old woman was found lying unconscious and drunk beside VIP Road, near Dum Dum Park, on Monday morning. Officers of Lake Town police station took her to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Praveen Kumar, superintendent of police, North 24-Parganas, said the woman, a widow, worked in a beauty parlour. On Sunday evening, she had quarrelled with her 22-year-old son and left home. She attended a party at night, but did not return home.

Probe order

North 24-Parganas district magistrate Manoj Panth on Monday asked Salt Lake sub-divisional officer (SDO) Tapas Chowdhury to find out whether any road-repair work was taken up after March 1, the day the model code of conduct came into force. ?The SDO will go through all documents and submit a report. Any repair work taken up after March 1 will have to be stalled,? he said.

Lakes suicide

A man in his mid-50s committed suicide by jumping into Rabindra Sarobar on Sunday night. Officers of Lake police station found the body early on Monday. The man was later identified as Jayanta Prasad Das, a resident of Jatin Das Road. Police said he had been suffering from depression.

Metro disruption

Metro Railway services were disrupted several times on Monday. A Dum Dum-bound train was delayed by eight minutes at Rabindra Sadan after station staff noticed smoke billowing from a compressor under one of the coaches. The passengers were shifted to other coaches. Tollygunge-bound train was detained at Park Street as some passengers pulled the alarm chain after noticing a flash. Another Tollygunge-bound train, scheduled to leave Dum Dum at 1.40 pm, was cancelled.

Girl kills herself

A 22-year-old daughter of a constable of the city police committed suicide by setting herself on fire at Police Housing Estate on Monday afternoon. Police said Madhumita, daughter of Aurobindo Patra, died at Medical College and Hospital. No suicide note was found.
