Porous borders on poll panel agenda

Calcutta, April 3: The Election Commission is going to discuss the sealing of Bengal’s borders with Bihar and Jharkhand at a meeting with officials from the three states in Delhi tomorrow.

Bengal chief secretary Amit Kiran Deb, home secretary Prasad Ranjan Ray and director-general of police S.C. Avasthy and their Bihar and Jharkhand counterparts will attend the meeting.

Bengal chief electoral officer Debashis Sen has also been called to shed light on specific requirements relating to the sealing of borders.

Tomorrow’s meeting would dwell on the number of police camps to be set up in the border areas of Bengal and the adjoining states. These camps will keep a check on the movement of men and vehicles on and around polling day.

The poll panel apprehends that armed miscreants might try to enter Bengal on election days. “This has to be prevented at any cost and that is why tomorrow’s meeting has been convened,’’ Sen said.

The number of names deleted from the final electoral rolls might increase after the filing of nominations for the second phase of elections ends, the chief electoral officer said. “We’ll come to know the updated figure in two days.”

After the publication of the final rolls on February 22, the figure stood at 13 lakh. It increased to 14.35 lakh after filing nominations for the first phase got over.
