Jamshedpur, March 31: A team of officials from Mittal Steel today made a preliminary survey of Seraikela and Ghatshila areas in Seraikela-Kharsawan and East Singhbhum districts, respectively, for setting up a greenfield project.
The team, led by company?s chief executive officer Sanak Mishra, made an on-the-spot inspection of Seraikela area after holding talks with Seraikela-Kharsawan deputy commissioner Nagendra Prasad Singh. In East Singhbhum, the team was joined by additional district collector Rakesh Kumar.
Seraikela-Kharsawan DC said the team has expressed satisfaction over the potential of the area vis-a-vis the company?s requirement of land, water and road and rail connectivity. District administration sources disclosed that the company would compromise on at least 10,000 acres of area, needed for the plant.
Representatives from Ranchi-based engineering consultancy Mecon and UK-based Hatch Associates also accompanied the Mittal team to Galudih area in Ghatshila block of East Singhbhum district later in the afternoon. From the government side, the team was assisted by industry department deputy director S. Barla.
Barla told The Telegraph that the company officials visited Chitirbilla, Kalapathar and Sinisidhna villages under Seraikela circle for site survey.
Mittal Steel?s general manager (project management) S.K. Venkatesh said they have already made preliminary survey of Karra-Govindpur area (in Ranchi district) few days back. ?It is too early to say which site the company would prefer for its greenfield project,? he said. The team is also likely to visit Manoharpur area under West Singhbhum within next few days, sources disclosed.
The Seraikela site is about 30 km from the nearest railway line that passes through Sini railway station. The company officials discussed the need of constructing two railway bridges over Kharkai and Sanjay rivers. These two rivers will meet the water requirement of the company.
The Galudih area in East Singhbhum also has the potential of becoming the favourite site for the company with perennial source of water and rail connectivity. Subernarekha river flows through it, which happens to be a major source of water in Singhbhum-Kolhan region. Besides, Ghatshila and Galudih railway stations are the main railway heads on Howrah-Mumbai route. Exact details of private, government land and forest area encompassing both the sites, however, could not be known.
