River horse

When a hippo yawns, it does not mean he or she is sleepy, it is actually a sign of threat sign. Showing off their thick, sharp, canine teeth, the message sent is ?get out of here, or else!? The hippo has a massive mouth measuring almost half-a-metre across! The hippo?s Latin name is Hippopotamus amphibious meaning ?river horse?. It is the third largest land animal after the white rhino and the elephant, and can weigh a whopping 1,800 kg (4,000 pounds) or more!

Found in Africa, hippos love fresh waters, so rivers are a favourite though they are also found in salt water areas near river mouths and in lakes. Hippos are vegetarian and chomp on grass and fruit and spend most of the day in water.
