Air force expedition to new cave

Shillong, March 15 (PTI): After an international team of speleologists discovered the sub-continent?s longest cave system in Meghalaya, it is now the turn of the Indian Air Force (IAF) to undertake caving activity in the state.

?Tomorrow, a team of 15 air warriors from the Eastern Air Command will undertake a caving expedition in Jaintia Hills district, from where the discovery was made under the Meghalaya Adventures Association,? a source in the IAF said.

The seven-day expedition will cover Nongkhlieh, Wahshlkhar, Khaddum, Camphe and Lumshong caves in the district. The exercise is being undertaken barely a fortnight after the team found a 22.2-km-long cave, surpassing the previous record of the 21.55 km one in the same district.

The international team focussed on the caving areas of Shnongrim ridge near Shnongrim village in Nongkhlieh area. From February 7 to March 1, the team explored 39 caves. They mapped and photographed 15,498 metres of a new cave passage.
