State withdraws plea in rape case

The state government on Wednesday withdrew its petition filed in Calcutta High Court, challenging the Alipore court order that the report of the five-member committee formed to ascertain the views of an alleged rape victim could not be treated as evidence. he government had formed the panel as the alleged victim was deaf and mute and could not communicate with the court. The trial court had refused to go through the report of the panel. he deaf-and-mute girl was allegedly raped by three police constables in a prison van four years ago.

HS rule relaxed

Students will be allowed the use of non-programmable scientific calculators while writing their Plus II papers, the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary (HS) Education said on Wednesday. The council had earlier announced that the examinees would not be allowed to use any scientific calculator. The HS exams begin on Friday.

Clinic protest

Around 50 people demonstrated in front of a private hospital, in the Lake police station area, after the death of a one-and-a-half-year-old girl on Wednesday noon. Ria Goswami, who was admitted to the hospital on March 13, died on Wednesday morning. Her family members and relatives blamed medical negligence for the death.

Demonstration

Bangiya Christiya Pariseba, an association of churches under various denominations, will hold a demonstration near Gandhiji?s statue in the Maidan area on Thursday. The organisation will protest the passing of a bill, making it mandatory for all state-aided Christian schools to recruit teachers through the West Bengal School Service Commission.

Holi arrests

Over 1,300 Holi revellers have been arrested across the city. Police said 891 were picked up on Tuesday and the rest on Wednesday for ?disorderly conduct?.

Cops injured

Two officers of the mounted police were injured on Wednesday morning after being hit by a private bus on route 12C/1 on Red Road. Police said the injured were admitted to SSKM Hospital in a critical condition. The driver has been arrested and the bus impounded.

Body found

The body of 16-year-old Ananda Sahu, missing since Tuesday, was found floating in the Hooghly on Wednesday morning. Police said the body was spotted near Chhotulal Ghat, in the North Port police station area. Sahu might have drowned while bathing at Mali Ghat.

Suicide

Sambhu Ram, 22, was found hanging from the ceiling of his residence at his Panchanantala Road residence, in the Lake police station area, on Wednesday morning. Police said Ram had been suffering from depression.

Liquor haul

Acting on a tip-off, excise officials carried out a night-long raid on Tuesday and seized 4,000 litres of country liquor, worth Rs 2 lakh, in Dum Dum, Khardah, Ultadanga and some other areas on the the northern fringes of the city. Police said the raids would continue.
