Dibrugarh, March 7: The CRPF today set up a court of inquiry to probe the incident in which a head constable of the paramilitary force shot dead two of his colleagues without apparent provocation at their camp in Dhemaji district of Assam yesterday.
Nawal Singh and Ganga Ram died on the spot and another, Mahesh Kumar, was injured when Chocha Varajang snatched a light machine gun from a sentry and opened fire indiscriminately.
CRPF deputy inspector-general of police (operations) G.D. Pewal visited the camp today and took stock of the situation.
But Raj Kumar, second in command of the 168 Battalion of the force, declined to reveal the preliminary findings. ?I cannot say anything now, you will know everything once the investigation is over,? he said.
The bodies of the slain constables were sent to their native places in Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan after the completion of post-mortem and the mandatory official procedures.
The condition of Mahesh Kumar is said to be critical. He was operated upon at the Assam Medical College and Hospital last night.
Dhemaji additional superintendent of police (headquarters) Swapnanil Deka said the situation in and around the camp was under control. ?There was some amount of panic among the residents in and around the camp as the people heard gunshots. The situation is totally under control and we are maintaining a strict vigil.?
Varajang, who pulled the trigger on his colleagues, is stated to be improving. He was hit by two bullets on his shoulder when the other jawans retaliated.
