praise of womanhood |

Reminding us of women?s
immense contribution in diverse spheres of life,
International Women?s Day is celebrated every
year with much fanfare across the city. This
year, too, it will be marked by a number of
programmes in recognition of their courage,
devotion and determination in reaching their
goals. Hosted by Rotary Club of Calcutta Metro
City, Swayam Siddha II (at Rotary Sadan;
3 pm) is an appreciation of the essence of womanhood,
where woman achievers of Bengal like Rita Bhimani,
Dona Ganguly, Sanchita Bhattacharya (who also
presents an Odissi recital), Manju Rathi and
others will be felicitated. Also featuring an
exhibition of collages on Womanhood by
Uma Siddhanta. Sangya hosts a special felicitation
ceremony (Rabindra Sadan; 5.30 pm) for Nabanita
Dev Sen, Gouri Ghosh, Taslima Nasreen, Indrani
Halder and Kaushiki Desikan, along with a programme
of recitation. Rotary Club of Calcutta Old City
holds a panel discussion, From Kitchen to
Khaki (Gyan Manch; 6.15 pm); panelists including
singer Lopamudra Mitra, social worker Suchetana
Bhattacharjee and actor Papiya Adhikary. Beyond
Dreams will also felicitate 10 ?Great Ladies
of Kolkata? (Birla Academy; 6 pm). An art camp
will be held at Municipal Park in protest against
women trafficking.
