Bodo students protest arrests

Kokrajhar, March 3: Activists of the All Bodo Students? Union (Absu) today staged a demonstration in Kokrajhar, demanding immediate withdrawal of all police cases pertaining to incidents during the decade-long movement for Bodoland.

The trigger for the campaign was the arrest of two persons ? Amol Basumatary of Amguri and Alon Basumatary of Phukagaon ? yesterday.

The student activists marched from the Absu headoffice, Bodofa House, to the Bodoland Territorial Council secretariat and the Kokrajhar deputy commissioner?s office. Along the way, they shouted slogans against chief minister Tarun Gogoi and BTC chief Hagrama Mohilary.

The Absu members later submitted a memorandum to Governor Ajai Singh, the chief minister and the BTC chief through the deputy commissioner.

The memorandum demanded ?suspension of the recent move of arresting Bodoland movement activists on any charge and the immediate release of the arrested persons?.

Jiron Basumatary, president of Absu?s Kokrajhar district unit, said: ?The government has begun reactivating old police cases and so far arrested two persons. It is unfortunate.?
