Childless woman immolates herself

Godavari Devi, 32, a housewife of Kankinara, in the Barrackpore police station area, committed suicide on Tuesday morning by setting herself ablaze. Godavari's husband, Saulia Dubey, and father-in-law, who rushed to save her from the flames, were severely burnt. They have been admitted to a local hospital, where their condition was stated to be critical. The police said Godavari, married for 15 years, had been 'depressed' as she did not have children. 'Depression may have driven her to take her life,' said an officer.

Close shave for MLA

Opposition chief whip in the Assembly and Trinamul Congress MLA Sovandeb Chattopadhyay had a narrow escape on Tuesday afternoon when his car was hit by a speeding taxi on Rashbehari Avenue, near Lake Market. His car was badly damaged. The taxi was impounded and the driver arrested.

Exams begin

The ICSE-ISC and the CBSE exams, conducted by the Council for Indian School Certificate Examinations and the Central Board of Secondary Education, respectively, begin on Wednesday. Around 40,000 students from the city and elsewhere in the state will take the tests.

Students' protest

Master of Computer Application students of Pailan College of Management and Technology, in Bishnupur, on the city's southern fringes, continued their agitation on the second consecutive day on Tuesday to press for abolition of uniform fees. Principal Saibal Kumar Mukhopadhayay asserted that no one would be allowed to join classes without uniform.

Dead in Lakes

A 50-year-old man was found dead in the Dhakuria Lakes on Tuesday morning. Police claimed that there were no marks of injury on the body, which has been sent for post-mortem. Lake police station has initiated a case of unnatural death. The identity of the victim is yet to be established.

Tough paper

A large number of Madhyamik examinees complained that the history paper on Tuesday was tough. The board of secondary education, however, denied having received any complaint.

Mishap death

A van driver died after being knocked down by a truck at the crossing of Vivekananda Road and Duff Street early on Tuesday. He was taken to NRS Medical College and Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead.

Run over

Rohan Roy Chowdhury, 11, was run over by a Maruti van on Moore Avenue, in the Regent Park area, on Tuesday evening. Police said he was taken to MR Bangur Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Bus casualty

An unidentified man, aged around 60, died when an Esplanade-bound private bus, on route 57, knocked him down at the western end of Howrah bridge, under Golabari police station, around 1.30 pm on Tuesday. The driver fled.

Wife killed

A 25-year-old housewife, Salema Bibi, died after husband Ismail Dhali allegedly hit her on the head with a chopper at their residence in Kulpara, off EM Bypass, on Monday night.
