Tee glory amid big shots

Jamshedpur, Feb. 19: C.D. Singh of Golmuri Club today emerged on top at the 55th Steel City Golf meet with a nett score of 64.

Chief of army staff General J.J. Singh handed over the prizes to the winners of the various categories that were contested in the meet.

Singh, who had a handicap of eight, edged past Beldih Club?s Ravi Sharma to stamp his authority in the men?s field. Sharma had a nett of 70.

The Golmuri Club golfer also finished with the best gross of 72.

R. Balasubramanian of Fort William, Calcutta, took the title in the women?s category, pipping Sujata Sachdev of Beldih Club.

Balasubramanian, who had a handicap of 22, grabbed the top honours with a nett score of 74. Shraddhanjali Singh of Beldih Club had the best gross of 78.

Varun Jaiswal of Golmuri Club won in the children?s category with a gross of 42 while Beldih Club?s Arush Sabherwal had to be content with a second-place finish.

Arush?s clubmate R. Aditya was second runner-up with a gross of 45.

The honours list did not end there. B. Medeka of Royal Calcutta Golf Course was adjudged the best outstation golfer while Karan Atwal was awarded for the longest drive at 297 yards. Praveen Singh won the closest to the pin title.

Shambhu Tiwari had the best gross (84) in the B division while Shahid Akhtar had the same honour in the C section with 86.

Rajesh Patel had the best nett (71) in the 0-14 handicap category. M.K. Jha, with 69, had the best in the 15-24 handicap section with 69. Divesh Kumar took the honours with a nett score of 61 in the 25-36 section even as Mansoor Ali finished with the best nett (70) in the veterans? category. Farzan Heerjee was declared the best local golfer.

The steel city tournament is the oldest golfing event here and is known for attracting big names from the corporate sector.

Tata Steel managing director B. Muthuraman, his counterpart in Tinplate Company of India Limited B.L. Raina and former executive director of the steel major K.C. Mehra displayed their putting and driving skills in this year?s edition of the tournament organised by Beldih Club.
