Cash sop for family planning
- No-scalpel vasectomy

Ranchi, Feb. 12: In order to encourage husbands contributing in family planning, the government has launched a no-scalpel vasectomy camp with a cash gift of Rs 250 for those having done the operation.

The state health department, which has decided to popularise this technique to monitor population explosion, has got good response in Ranchi and Bokaro ? two districts where the camps are already over.

The drive will also be undertaken across all the districts (see chart), said state reproductive and child health coordinator Syed Iqbal Hussain.

All those undergoing the free operation will be given Rs 250 as bonus, besides free medicines worth Rs 45. The motivator, who brings in the person to get the operation done, will also be given Rs 40 separately as a mark of encouragement.

Hussain said the special camp has been drawing a good response. ?In Bokaro, as many as 239 persons have done NSV in the three-day camp. In Ranchi, we have not compiled the cases but the response was tremendous,? added Hussain, who is also the convener for the special programme for the state.

?A significant aspect of the operation is that it does not involve use of scalpel, therefore there is no requirement of stitches. It takes just 10 minutes to get the operation successfully done and the person can resume work after two days. However, he is advised not to use cycle for one week,? he said.

?The person undergoing the operation can start doing normal sex with his partner after three days of the operation but with condoms. He, however, need not use condom after three months or 20 ejaculations, whichever is earlier. There is no weakness, no side effect, no change in mardangi,? he said.

This is a new technique of vasectomy started in China. By a special pointed forceps a tiny hole is made above the scrotum and within two days the hole heals itself after the operation.

At present, there are 32 surgeons performing the operation in the state, which took up the technique last year.
