ASEB in semis

assam club football

Hailakandi, Feb. 7: Assam State Electricity Board (ASEB) SC, Guwahati marched into the semi-finals of the 10th Assam Club Championship football tournament defeating Moran Town Club of Charaideo 3-1 in the last quarterfinal here today.

Although the Moran outfit dominated the proceedings, it was the powermen who ruled the roost with Aranjit Brahma opening the account in the seventh minute.

The lead was increased within a minute with Nitu Narzary finding the net to help ASEB lead 2-0 at the breather.

Mani Kanta Brahma, who has just recovered from an ankle injury, pumped in the third goal for ASEB with a long ranger from the midfield in the 56th minute.

Mantu Majhi fired in the only salvo for the Moran side in the dying minutes of the match. The margin would have been bigger had Sanjiba Rongpi not missed the net twice on penalty shootouts, both of which were brilliantly saved by Town Club custodian Chanakya Das.

Referee Prabir Kumar Das awarded the powermen with penalty shots for dangerous tackles with ASEB?s Suresh Das and Dwipen Katoky. The match was disrupted for about five minutes with the Moran side protesting the referee?s decision for the second penalty. Rongpi was also cautioned with a yellow card.

Assam Police Blues will clash with Oil India Ltd in the first semi-final tomorrow. The second semi-final between ASEB and 2 Assam Special Reserve Force, Diphu has been rescheduled for Friday as the organisers decided not to hold any match on Thursday, on the occasion of Muharram.

The final will be played on Sunday.
