Poll revision call

Siliguri, Feb. 6: The subdivisional information and cultural officer has requested voters of Siliguri and Phansidewa Assembly segments to apply for the deletion of the names of dead voters in their families and of those who are no longer permanent residents of these constituencies.

The applications are to be submitted as early as possible at the office of the SDO in case of Siliguri and the block offices for those staying in Phansidewa.


Conference

Siliguri: The annual conference of All-Bengal Municipal Workers' Federation was held here on Monday. Addressing workers, CPM state committee member Jibitesh Sarkar demanded residential facilities for the workers, permanent jobs for casual labourers working from 1991 and transparency in recruitment and promotion procedures.


Archery meet

Gangtok: Ravangla in South Sikkim will host this year's Chief Minister's Gold Cup archery tournament to begin from next week. Twenty-one teams from Sikkim, Darjeeling, Bhutan, Phuentsholing and Thimphu will participate in the meet.


Cinchona stir

Kalimpong: United Forum, an umbrella organisation of the trade union wings of different political parties, has threatened to begin a movement against the proposed privatisation of cinchona plantation. The forum is planning a strike in Darjeeling district on February 26 and a roadblock on NH 31A at Coronation Bridge on March 15.


Cricket centre

Cooch Behar: Bengal pacer Shib Shankar Paul has approached the district administration for land to set up a cricket academy in Cooch Behar town. Paul, who was born and brought up in Tufanganj in the district, met the district magistrate and zilla parishad sabhadhipati on Monday. Both have promised to cooperate, Paul said before leaving for Calcutta later.


Robbers held

Islampur: Three suspected robbers were nabbed from Dhantala market here on Sunday night. Three crude bombs were recovered from them.
