Human excellence through education

Dayanand Public School, an English-medium co-educational school run by the Arya Samaj Trustees, was founded in 1989.

Ever open to innovative methods and experimentation, it has since then managed to make a mark in its own quiet way. Over the years it has grown to be able to boast of having an impressive number of students and teachers.

What?s special is the bonding shared by the students and the staff members, the combined strength of which is what has taken the school to where it is.

With its dream of continuously striving towards academic excellence, it wants to grow and expand in every way possible, whether in academics, sports, arts, and of course, overall development of the children.

At present there are about 500 students in the school, which holds classes till the tenth standard.

It however has plans to expand itself and start its Plus Two section in the next academic session, which is something both the school authorities and the students are looking forward to.

Vision and mission

The school?s vision is to strike a balance between thought and action. A lot of stress is laid on helping the children develop a wider perspective and a broader, more balanced outlook towards life.

It believes every child is special, and every child is talented in a different way. It tries out to bring out and encourage the hidden, latent talent of the children, whether it?s in academics, sports or arts. Also, it tries to give them an insight into the moral, spiritual and social questions that all young people usually ask.

Achieving overall human excellence through education remains its objective.

They also believe that parents should be integral part of all such programmes for their children and they should be made to feel important and part of the process, too. Be it the recently held inter-school handwriting contest or the annual sports day, which was celebrated for the second year in succession, parents are encouraged to take part and suggest ways of improving the school?s functions and activities. They are also an integral part of the planning committees.

New method mantras

No homework, no exams, no books, are the radical mantras the school has incorporated. Whether in academics or co-curricular activities, innovation is the keyword. Right from kindergarten students enjoy the freedom of being able to walk in with only their tiffin boxes to stress and exam-free classes, where the emphasis is on ?learning? (input) rather than ?memorising?.

To the delight of the junior students no terminal examinations are held. Instead, they are judged on a system of continuous evaluation.

There are, however, regular rounds of unit tests to keep the students on their toes the year round.

The school tries to see that children do not need to carry work home in the form of tedious homework. The firm belief is that the task of teaching should be done in the school itself.

Next academic session onwards, the school plans to divide the first term into two, to help students concentrate better and reduce work pressure.

Action please

Dancing, Eastern music, yoga, physical fitness programmes and different kinds of sports disciplines are just some of the activities that the children may indulge in.

Keeping in mind the active interest of the students in sports, the school has re-introduced the sports day after a gap of many years.

Building blocks

Infrastructure is not lacking, but the school authorities are working towards more.

Though there are not more than two sections for the classes, they are aided with laboratories for biology, physics and chemistry, as well as a computer laboratory, where the students may avail of hands-on training.

There is one main building with 20 classrooms.

There is also a much-needed audio-visual room for the little ones where the lessons are made interesting for them through colours and visual effects. Teachers are encouraged to include innovative methods, which are interactive, and do not just push down knowledge on the young ones. As a teacher correctly points out, they are here to ignite the curiosity of the children, make them active members of the class and not mere passive recipients.

Entrance anxiety

Admission procedure is fairly simple. For the higher classes, students have to answer a written test followed by an interview. Kindergarten children do not have to take any entrance test and are merely observed for what interests them.

School authorities keep records of any fear or weakness the child has so that they can be worked upon.
