Jamshedpur, Jan. 31: Agonies notwithstanding, he seems focused to bag medals on the tracks.
Meet Shani Chandra Bose, whose maternal grandfather is begging alms to feed him. The 21-year-old, who is enduring pangs of unemployment, is suffering from hearing and speech impairment.
His feats in national athletics championship has so far failed to evoke any response from political leaders.
A resident of Jawaharnagar in Mango, Bose has made an earnest appeal to the East Singhbhum deputy commissioner to bring an end to his misery.
The talented athlete claimed four gold and one silver in the 14th National Athletics Championship for the Deaf held at Siliguri from December 7 to 9 last year.
Representing Jharkhand, Bose, a trainee of Tata Steel Training Centre, bagged gold medal in 800 metre and 5,000 metre run, 4x400 metre and 4x100 metre relay and silver in 1,500 metre in junior boys? category. He has also won medals in different state and national meets.
?We are fed up with this situation. I am begging on the streets for feeding my grandson. He remains unemployed despite winning medals in national athletics meet for hearing impaired,? said Jugal Kishore Singh, his maternal grandfather.
?I cannot move around but somehow managing to get something as my grandson will starve if I remain at home,? said the 74-year-old while showing medals won by Bose.
Singh added that Bose has tried to draw the attention of everyone, from the President to the chief minister, but so far nothing has materialised.
Today, Singh and his grandson sat under the shade of a tree near the office of the deputy commissioner. Bose sat quietly with medals slung across his shoulder.
At a time when the state government has announced cash awards to athletes winning medals in international events, it seems there is none to listen to Bose?s woes.
