Minister hints at water charges
Water charges may be reintroduced in the city, municipal affairs minister Asok Bhattacharya hinted on Tuesday. Faced with a soaring operational cost of water supply, the government wants to realise part of the expenses from the beneficiaries, Bhattacharya said. He was speaking at the unveiling of a water treatment plant-cum-booster station in Jorabagan. The plant was commissioned by chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee.
ayoral council member Mrinal Kanti Mondol said the civic body spends Rs 165 crore a year on water supply. The new booster stations will put an additional burden of Rs 5 crore.

Arrest for alleged rape
Rabi Dalui, 45, was arrested in Sarsuna, on the southern fringes of the city, on Tuesday for allegedly raping his six-year-old niece. Police said the incident occurred on Sunday. The victim was admitted to MR Bangur Hospital after she complained of pain. She narrated the incident to a doctor of the hospital on Tuesday.
UGC visit
A UGC team will visit St Xavier?s College next week for an inspection, part of the process of granting autonomy to the institution, Calcutta University officials said on Tuesday.
Shop burgled
Two digital cameras and Rs 12,000 were burgled from a shop in Alipore on Monday night. The theft was noticed on Tuesday morning, when the owner came to open the shop.
Institute survey
Indian Statistical Institute will soon undertake a survey on the social and economic status of a minority community across the state, said Syed Sajjad Jahid Adnan, chairman of the state minorities commission. Adnan called on the chief minister on Tuesday.
Baby found
A four-month-old girl was found in front of a building on Raja Rammohan Roy Road around 8.15 pm on Tuesday. Local residents admitted her to a nearby hospital.
Guard injured
A 45-year-old guard of CESC was injured when he accidentally fired his revolver on Tuesday afternoon. Police said the bullet grazed Anil Singha Roy?s chest. He was rushed to SSKM Hospital.
Sleaze duo
Two youths were arrested in Baruipur on Tuesday after a large number compact discs of pornographic films were found in their possession.
Demonstration
Around 200 doctors at state-run hospitals and medical institutes, working on contractual basis, staged a demonstration at Swasthya Bhavan, in Salt Lake, on Tuesday. They were demanding regularisation of their jobs.
Four in the net
Four persons were arrested in the New Market area early on Tuesday. Police said Mohammad Raja, Parvez Alam, Mohammad Shahnawaz and Mohammad Iqbal had gathered to rob two jewellery shops.
