CM slams Opp. over rehab

Jamshedpur, Jan. 15: Chief minister Arjun Munda today came down heavily on the Opposition for its ?anti-people? act, alleging that the UPA has taken the matter of displacement and rehabilitation as an issue rather than a problem.

?Suggesting solutions for a problem is welcome, but making the matter a political issue is a different thing. The Opposition, without coming forward with its suggestions on the issue of displacement and rehabilitation, is now turning it into a political issue,? said the chief minister at his Ghorabandha residence.

Munda, who arrived this morning to celebrate Tusu (Makar Sankranti), said his government was looking forward to convening an all-party meeting on the issue again.

?The meeting will be called during the first week of February. This time, we expect that the Opposition will take part in the meeting and give suggestions to the government on what it feels would be a workable rehabilitation package for the displaced populace,? said Munda.

Munda evaded voicing an opinion on JMM chief Shibu Soren?s claim that the UPA would call an all-party meeting on the issue, to which the state government would be invited, stating he had little knowledge on Soren?s stand.

Instead, the chief minister said his government?s line was that there would not be much displacement if the MoUs come through in the near future.

?The idea is to resettle scattered hamlets in and around the proposed industries at a specific location with all facilities and rehabilitation packages,? he added.

The chief minister said the past government at the Centre and state, were unable to formulate a comprehensive rehabilitation policy.

?This comes in the way of present investment proposals. If we miss this opportunity, then the state will be exploited for its raw materials. We could not think of value-added projects and utilisation of minerals in the state so as to witness an economic boom in the state and country,? he said.

On the issue of Mittal, the chief minister said the state has signed an understanding with them and was looking forward to the second phase of the process, which involves granting iron ore mines and allocating land.
