Six arrested for car-jacking
Six persons were arrested on Thursday afternoon for allegedly trying to hijack a four-wheeler in Chanditala, on the northern fringes of the city. The accused had hired a Tata Sumo in Chandernagore, Hooghly, saying they were to visit a relative at SSKM Hospital.
hen the car approached the Chanditala checkpoint, on Durgapur Expressway, one of them tied a gamchha around the driver?s neck. But the driver kept pressing the horn, alerting a police patrol nearby. Debasish Chakraborty, officer-in-charge of Chanditala police station, said all six were ?most wanted? criminals.
Robbery on road
An armed gang of 15 waylaid a four-wheeler and robbed four passengers in Iswarigacha, on the northern fringes of the city, late on Wednesday. The four were on their way to Tarapith. Police said the gang had blocked Naihati Road with a huge trunk. The four had lost cash and valuables worth thousands.
Buddha plea
Chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee on Thursday asked Calcutta University (CU) to explore the possibility of growing medicinal plants in Baruipur. The university owns a farmland in Baruipur, on the southern fringes of the city.

Bhattacharjee urged the delegation to sound out agencies engaged in cultivation of medicinal plants about the viability of the project. Medicinal plants are required for researches in biotechnology.

CU anniversary
A week-long programme to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Calcutta University starts on January 17. Chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee on Thursday reviewed the programme schedule with a university delegation. President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam will inaugurate the celebrations, which will end on January 24.
Shop fire
A garment shop in Sonarpur, on the southern fringes of the city, was destroyed in a fire early on Thursday. Three tenders were sent to the spot. Fire brigade officers suspect an electrical short-circuit had caused the blaze.
Goods gutted
Goods worth at least Rs 1 crore were destroyed after a leather godown in Topsia caught fire around 10.15 am on Thursday. Fire brigade sources said a leak from a generator might have caused the blaze. Eight fire tenders were pressed into action.
Dacoit held
A dacoit from Bihar was arrested in Howrah on Thursday. Police said Ashoke Sharma, originally from Begusarai, had rented a house in Baishnabpara Lane. He was allegedly involved in a bank dacoity in Bihar.
Arms unit
Acting on a tip-off, police unearthed an illegal arms factory in Dankuni?s Raghunathpur Pal Para, in Hooghly, on Thursday morning. More than two dozen unassembled spares of firearms were seized. One person has been arrested.
BSF press corner
The South Bengal Frontier of Border Security Force (BSF) will set up a press corner on Lord Sinha Road. This will be the first press corner of the BSF, Somesh Goel, inspector-general of the force, said on Thursday.
