Firing at trawler

Calcutta, Jan. 5: A fisherman, Ganesh Majhi, 45, was killed and four others were injured when forest guards of Orissa opened fire at their trawler in the Bay of Bengal last night.

Police said the trawler from Kakdwip in South 24-Parganas had drifted towards the Orissa coast near Rajnagar and forest guards there mistook the fishermen for pirates. The injured were admitted to a hospital in Cuttack. Fisheries minister Kiranmoy Nanda said he would take up the matter with the Orissa government.

Kanti Biswas

Calcutta: School education minister Kanti Biswas came down heavily on inspectors of schools of various districts for their failure to present a true picture of the state of schools. He said because of this, the government could not take proper steps for improvement of the schools. Biswas was addressing school inspectors at a refresher workshop.

Court recce

Calcutta : A 10-member team from the Union law ministry will visit Jalpaiguri for an inspection of the premises from where the proposed north Bengal circuit bench of Calcutta High Court will function. An additional secretary of the ministry will lead the delegation and the state judicial secretary will accompany the team. The functioning of the proposed circuit bench will begin only after the Centre’s approval.

Trader killed

Calcutta: Ganesh Roy, 50, a resident of Duttabad, was killed when a car hit him at the Labony bus terminus around 7 pm on Thursday. Roy, who dealt in scrap plastic and jute bags, was riding a bicycle when the car hit him. He was taken to hospital where he was declared brought dead. The car’s driver was arrested and the vehicle seized by the Bidhannagar North police station.

Arms den

Chinsurah: Police unearthed an arms factory at Dankuni in Hooghly district, 40 km from Calcutta, on Thursday. Equipment used to manufacture pistols and revolvers were seized. One person was arrested in the raid, conducted following a tip-off.

Judge posted

Calcutta: Justice Tapen Sen of Haryana and Punjab High Court has been transferred to Calcutta High Court. High court sources said Justice Sen will assume his new office within couple of weeks.
