Cinema paradiso

Convergence Institute of Media, Management and Information Technology Studies (Commits), Bangalore, organised a seminar on filmmaking on December 6. Among the Bollywood luminaries present were Ashutosh Gowariker, Nagesh Kukunoor, Khalid Mohammad (picture left) and Mahesh Dattani.

The seminar explored the new trends in Hindi cinema today, and helped students know the men who are shaping the future of Hindi cinema better. The speakers fielded questions from the students as they discussed their experiences and future projects. ?Cinema cannot change the system of society. The education system must change for experimentation in cinema,? was Gowarikar?s message to students of cinema.

CALCUTTA
Girls go get it

Last week, students of the Apex Institute of Management showed what ?girl power? can do. It was late evening and we were cooling our heels at our hostel at Golpark, when a friend came back crying. She had just lost her wallet with Rs 2000 in it.

She had dropped the wallet inside a public telephone booth, but didn?t realise it. A little girl, who was standing nearby, spotted it and immediately ran after my friend to inform her. However, when my friend went back to the booth, the wallet was nowhere to be found. When confronted, the owner of the booth denied having anything to do with it, and instead, abused my friend.

The moment we heard about the incident, all the girls went to the booth together and accused the owner of having engineered the theft. When we threatened to file an FIR with the police, he tried to scare us away. After over two hours of bickering, the booth owner finally relented and returned the money, with the wallet.

Three cheers for ?girl power?.
