Left fuel to green fire

Jamshedpur, Dec. 18: The Adivasi Adhikhar Morcha (AAM), along with the Communist parties, have chalked out a series of programmes to add teeth to their ongoing agitation against the state government on various issues.

Senior Left leaders like Rajya Sabha MP Sitaram Yechury and West Bengal minister Upen Kisku are also expected to join in the fray.

To begin with, a memorandum, outlining the demands of the parties, will be submitted to Governor Syed Sibtey Razi on December 20. Agitations will also be simultaneously held in Jamshedpur, Ranchi and Dumka on that day itself.

According to the chief convener of AAM, Salkhan Murmu, the decision to combine the green (adivasi) and the red (Left) was taken at a meeting held in Dumka on Saturday.

Murmu pointed out that the memorandum will deal extensively on five issues:

• Panchyat elections under the regulations of the Panchayat (Extension to Schedule Areas) Act (PESA).

• Scrapping of MoUs to prevent the displacement of tribals.

• Protest against the communal approach of the BJP.

• The non-reduction of Scheduled Tribe seats in Parliamentary/Assembly elections following delimitation.

• Condemning the autocratic practices of the Jharkhand police.

He added that the green-left combination will come together once again on February 27, 2006, during a rally in Dumka. Apart from the tribal outfits and the Left parties, Murmu said minorities and organisations representing other backward classes will also be invited air their views on the issues.
