Probe into midday meal fiasco

Silchar, Dec. 5: The Assam social welfare department has initiated a departmental investigation into allegations that sub-standard food was supplied for midday meals under the Integrated Child Development Programme for children at a primary school in Cachar.

The inquiry was ordered after a six-year-old girl died on having milk and biscuits in her school at Koroikandi village in Kathigorah block along the Indo-Bangla border.

At least 11 other children, all students at the lone primary school in the village, also fell sick after having the same food. A senior official of the social welfare department today confirmed that Mumpy Namasudra, who fell sick on Thursday along with the other children at the school, died at home on Saturday.

This is the second incident where children have fallen ill after having midday meals in the block primary schools. On November 23, six children fell ill after they were fed the midday meal at a primary school at Tarinipur village under the same block. They returned home looking pale and ended up with nausea and diarrhoea.

Assam social welfare minister Goutam Roy, who had rushed to the block, suspended two Anganwadi workers who were entrusted with distributing the food and showcaused the Child Development Project Officer for ?dereliction of duty?. Reports say the packets containing the milk powder and biscuits did not carry any expiry date.

Bank scam: The Arunachal Pradesh government on Sunday ordered an inquiry by Nabard into the liquidity scam at the Apex State Cooperative Bank. Later the cases of irregularities would be handed over to the CBI, reports PTI. Chief minister Gegong Apang told reporters that the inquiry would be completed in three months.
