Train stopped

Alipurduar, Dec. 5: About 1,000 passengers were left in the lurch when Guwahati-bound Saraighat Express was terminated here today.

The passengers, who said they had not been informed about it earlier, squatted on the tracks and were lathicharged. Railway said maintenance work on the signal system in Guwahati had forced them to cancel the train.

Jyotirmoyee

Calcutta: Former athlete and MP Jyotirmoyee Sikdar was admitted to SSKM Hospital on Sunday night with high fever and gastrointestinal problems. Hospital sources said her condition is stable.

Shop shooting

Calcutta: Four men on motorcycles shot at Golam Madri, an optician, outside his shop at Taltala after he downed shutters on Sunday. Police said the attackers were extortionists. Their bullets missed the target and hit Madri, 37, in the leg. He was taken to NRS Medical College Hospital.

LIC duo

Midnapore: Armed goons looted Rs 3.3 lakh and a cheque of Rs 20 lakh on Monday morning from two LIC employees going to deposit them at a bank in Jhargram, West Midnapore. As the duo got down from a car in front of the bank, 160 km from Calcutta, they snatched their bag.
