Medicine probe

Midnapore, Dec. 4: The East Midnapore health authorities today ordered a probe into the destroying of medicines worth over a lakh and documents by employees of Egra Subdivisional Hospital last month.

A preliminary probe has shown that though the medicines were past expiry dates, there was no mention of them in hospital records, said an official. They were burnt at night. Assistant chief medical officer B.B. Chand admitted negligence on the part of some employees of the hospital, 170 km from Calcutta.

Van kills two

Calcutta: Two persons were killed and another injured when a Matador van mounted a pavement and hit them near Falta in South 24-Parganas on Sunday. Police said Gaur Halder, 55, and Sumitra Purakait, 35, were killed while taking their morning stroll at Fatepur, 60 km from Calcutta.

Rebel alert

Calcutta: Police stations in West Midnapore, Bankura and Purulia have been put on alert against a possible attack during anniversary celebrations of the People’s Liberation Guerrilla Army, a CPI (Maoist) wing. Inspector-general, law and order, Raj Kanojia said the celebrations began on Friday.

Cat on prowl

Chinsurah: A fishing cat that attacked two farmers spread panic at Jamaibati village in Haripal, Hooghly, on Sunday. The villagers initially mistook it for a leopard.
