| STRUM CHUM: Bangla band Chandrabindoo
|
Bethune College celebrated its
annual festival, Aalap 2005, on November 18 and 19. Eastern
vocals, a debate and a creative writing competition, a band
meet and an antakshari were the events of the first
day.
The band meet was the most popular
event with students grooving to the tunes of different college
bands. But it was Bethune College along with St Paul?s College
which struck the right notes with the judges, with the two
sharing the winners? prize.
Day Two started with the quiz
and poster-making competitions followed by western vocals
and an expression (skit) choreography event. But the highlight
of the day, and in fact of Aalap, was the performance of
the Bangla band Chandrabindoo who entertained students in
characteristic fashion ? with subtle jokes and great songs.
It was a heart-warming experience on a cold winter evening.

Managementals
The ICFAI National College, Dum
Dum, Calcutta, recently organised a project that was meant
to assess the managerial excellence of the various puja
committees. It was a learning experience for all of us.
We realised the managerial qualities required to organise
such events ? right from the financial and human resource
planning stages to mobilising funds, conflict management,
crisis management, safety management and traffic management.

Getting legal
Assam University and the International
Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) organised a workshop on
International Humanitarian Law on November 14 at the university
campus. Prof. Debasish Chakraborty, dean of the School of
Information Sciences, Assam University, delivered the welcome
address.
The most interesting presentation
of the day came from Vincent Nicod of ICRC, who spoke on
the ?Changing Nature of Armed Conflicts and Challenges for
Humanitarian Organisations?.
There were a couple of other presentations
that also had the students interested. Dr Chakka, legal
officer, ICRC, then took over, and introduced his audience
to various aspects of international humanitarian law.

Our day
Children?s Day has always been
special for us Patricians because it is the only day in
the year when our teachers perform for us. November 14,
2005, was no different.
The programme started with a lovely
speech from our headmistress ? she told us how much she
loved us ? that had the students clapping enthusiastically.
Next was a hilarious skit performed by our junior school
teachers. Mr Banerjee?s song, Mr Lazarus?s rocking numbers
and Mr Pandey?s shayari followed by a qawwali
made for a great day that once again showed how much our
teachers cared for us.

Fun for a cause
St Augustine?s Day School recently
organised a fete at St Joseph?s Home (Little Sisters of
the Poor), situated near Rabindra Sadan. Various schools,
including St James, La Martiniere for Boys, Frank Anthony
Public School and Park English School, participated in the
fete. Each school had put up its own food and games stall
and there were some lovely prizes to be won.
The purpose of the fete was to
lend a helping hand to the Home and later, the proceeds
were handed over to the sisters. We would like to thank
the organisers, and especially our principal, C.R. Gasper,
for organising this fete for a noble cause.
