On peace mission across border

Ranchi, Nov. 28: The couple, N.K. Dey (77) and his wife Jyotirmayi Dey, has led active lives and been on cultural exchange tours to many countries.

But on December 6 they will undertake undoubtedly one of their most special tours when they travel to Pakistan on a goodwill and peace mission. This adventurous couple from Bokaro claim the tour will be the first-of-its-kind visit by a couple their age.

From politicians to stars to cricketers, a peace mission trip to Pakistan has been undertaken by many. But it?s a different story altogether when a couple of their age decides to cross the borders to build bridges. There they hope to win hearts and make friends by interacting with the people, enacting one-act plays and singing.

The 20-day tour will have the support of the government, said the secretary of the states arts, culture and youth affairs department, N.N Sinha. The couple, who love travelling, will start from Bokaro and move through Delhi, Amritsar, Atari, Lahore and Islamabad, finally reaching Zafarabad.

What particularly inspired the couple to undertake the trip was the recent earthquake which devastated life and property on both sides of the border. To the people affected, they want to offer their services. What is part of their mission is to go with their message of love and peace, considering the recent spurt in cross-border activities. Dey, long retired from his post of accounts officer in the Bokaro Steel Plant, had actually wanted to go on bike, for which permission was not granted.

Talking to The Telegraph from Bokaro, Dey pointed out: ?Innocent people are dying on both sides. People are crying for peace. Natural disasters are further aggravating the situation. The condition is really horrible. In such a situation, somebody has to take up the mission of love and peace. People of both the countries are alike then why so much hatred?? Dey asks.
