National meet in Shillong

Shillong, Nov. 25: Shillong is all set to host the seven-day 67th junior national table tennis tournament from December 5.

As many as 350 paddlers from 32 states will be vying for the Confederation of Industries of Meghalaya (CIM) trophy. The tournament has a total cash award of Rs 1 lakh. Big names in table tennis like Sanil Shetty, Devesh Karia, R.S. Raja and Saugata Sarkar will be seen in action at the U Tirot Sing Indoor Stadium.

Organising panel chairman and president of the Meg-halaya Table Tennis Association, R.G. Lyngdoh, said for the first time the Table Tennis Federation of India was going to introduce the player of the tournament award.

U-17 team: The Assam Cricket Association has named the state under-17 squad for the first Vijay Merchant Trophy East Zone match against Orissa to be played at Nagaon from December 2. The team includes Amit Sinha (captain), Krishanu Majumdar, Deep Boro, Rishav Das, Jnan Boro, Roshan Basfore, Noor Alam Sheikh (wk), Bikash Chetri, Nayanjyoti Das, Bikram Chetri, Kankan Das, Raju Das, Satyajit Debnath and Saumie Das. Coach will be Dhiraj Das and manager Biswajit Borah.

Royal Gold Cup: Phek Veteran Sporting Club on Friday sailed into the semi-finals of the 17th Royal Gold Cup, defeating Ziekezou Club 2-1 at the local ground in Kohima.

Felicitation: The Assam Directorate of Sports on Thursday felicitated 14 sportsperso-ns and organisers who have re-presented the state in various nationals during the last one year.
