Jamuna Devi dies

Jamuna Devi Baruah, wife of legendary actor Promothesh Baruah, died at her Calcutta residence at 2.30 am on Thursday, sources close to the family said in Dhubri. She had acted in 19 Hindi and Bengali films, including Devdas. She was born in 1919 and married Baruah in 1934.

Film on Lachit

Dispur will produce a film on Lachit Barphukan, Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi said in Guwahati on the occasion of Lachit Divas on Thursday. The government will request filmmaker Jahnu Barua to direct the film.

Road mishap

A girl student of Manipur University was killed and her companion injured when a bus hit the two-wheeler they were riding in Imphal West on Thursday morning. The girl, Akoijam Ranjana Devi, was an MSc student.

Four killed

Four persons of a marriage party were killed and 25 injured when the tractors they were travelling in was hit by a truck on NH-31 near Gurufella in Kokrajhar district on Wednesday night.

Bus dacoity

A Tezpur-bound bus was looted at Orang near Mangoldoi on Wednesday night. Six persons travelling on the bus took control of it, drove the bus to a secluded place and robbed the passengers of all their valuables.

Memorandum

A delegation of the Silchar-based Nikhil Bishnupriya Manipuri Mahasabha submitted a memorandum of demands to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Thursday.

Unemployed

The number of unemployed in Assam till December stood at 11,12,355, including 1,796 engineers.

Programme

The 26th session of the Northeast India History Association got under way at the Kokrajhar Music and Fine Arts College on Thursday.

Funds released

The Centre has released Rs 5.53 lakh to Arunachal Pradesh under its rural water supply scheme. The first instalment was of Rs 466.81 lakh.
