Mizoram PCC slams conduct violation

Aizawl, Nov. 23: The Mizoram PCC has accused chief minister and MNF party president Zoramthanga of violating the election model code of conduct during his campaign for Phuldungsei and Kawr-thah bypolls.

In a complaint submitted to the Election Commission, the PCC alleged that the meeting, in which Zoramthanga had called on students in Kawrthah, Kawrtethawveng, Tuidam and Darlak, was agai-nst the model code of conduct.

Party sources said a picture of Zoramthanga speaking in front of the students had been enclosed along with the complaint.

The Congress also alleged that Zoramthanga had promised better roads to the people of Damparengpui village on the condition that his candidate was elected.

Nine candidates have filed nominations for the ensuing byelections. Monday was the last day for filing nomin-ations. Magazine editor Lalhermawia, was the last to file his nomination.

Mamit deputy commissioner and returning officer Nghaklianmawia said all the nine candidates went through the scrutiny process today.

With speculation over two Congress dummy candidates, Lal Thanzara (Phuldungsei) and Chawngkunga (Kawr-thah), withdrawing their nominations, the last date for which is tomorrow, it is expected that seven candidates will be fighting for the two seats.

The ruling MNF party, besides the Zoram Nationalist Party (ZNP), Mizoram Peoples Conference (MPC), Janata Dal (United) and the BJP have decided against fielding their candidates.

Campaigning is in full swing, as both MNF chief Zoramthanga and PCC chief Lalthanhawla have been cam-ping in the two constituencies. Door to door campaign seems to be the most common form this time, sources said.
