Parents shut school

Krishnagar, Nov. 16: An army of students and their parents forced the shutdown of a primary school in Nadia last week to protest against the transfer of the headmaster.

About 350 students of Nimna Buniyadi Primary School in Chakdah, about 70 km from Calcutta, and their parents gheraoed the office of the sub-inspector of schools (primary), Kajal Mukherjee, for three hours from 10 am.

The parents said headmaster Debiprasad Ukil was hardworking and had tried to improve the quality of education and the school’s infrastructure.

Chairman of district primary council Bibhash Biswas said Ukil was transferred as his services were needed in another school in Chakdah.

Adhir case

Calcutta: Chief metropolitan magistrate Jaladhar Mandal has issued summons against Congress MP from Behrapore Adhir Chowdhury to appear in court on December 16. CPM state secretary Anil Biswas had moved a defamation suit against Chowdhury.

Trains stuck

Calcutta: As many as 14 local trains were delayed after a goods train derailed near Ballygunge station on Wednesday. Services in Eastern Railway’s Sealdah south section were disrupted for an hour since 7.10 pm.

MLA in net

Midnapore: Police on Wednesday arrested former Congress MLA from Mahishadal Debi Shankar Panda in connection with a rioting case of 1999. Panda was picked up from his Mahishadal residence, about 150 km from Calcutta.
