Stepmom accused

Siliguri, Nov. 10: A 12-year-old girl of Aurobindapally today lodged a complaint with the Siliguri police station, alleging that her stepmother Lolita Choudhury was trying to sell her off.

On the basis of the complaint, the police have detained the mother and taken the girl in safe custody.

The girl said on Wednesday she overheard her stepmother talking to someone about selling her off. 'I ran away from home and took shelter at my neighbour's place,' said the girl, who works in a bidi factory.

The girl has also accused her father, Subrata, of conspiring with her mother. Arrested several times earlier and wanted in many cases, Subrata is absconding at present.


Honest driver

Siliguri: In an exemplary act of honesty, an anonymous taxi-driver on Thursday deposited with the Siliguri police a digital camera, a cellphone and Rs 500 left in his taxi by a Slovenian tourist, Anju Misti. The tourist had hired his taxi to go to Darjeeling. The police are trying to trace Misti so that they can return the items to her.


Fake notes

Malda: Old Malda police on Thursday arrested two men from a hotel near NH 34 here with fake notes worth Rs 1.59 lakh in their possession. The men, Rafiq and Mujibar Sheikh, were going to deliver the notes to contact persons in South Dinajpur, police said. The money was found in denominations of 100 and 500.
