Orissa focus on manpower

Bhubaneswar, Oct. 31: The Naveen Patnaik government has decided to set up training institutes at Paradip, Jharsuguda and Duburi ? the future mining and industrial hubs of Orissa.

In this regard, the government will submit a proposal to the Centre for a proposed institute at Kalinganagar Industrial Complex in Duburi, Jajpur, on the lines of Biju Patnaik Steel Institute in Puri.

A decision to this effect was taken at a high-level meeting chaired by chief minister Naveen Patnaik on Saturday to review the progress of the recently-launched State Employment Mission.

Stressing the need for quality technical manpower, the chief minister said the institutes would not only cater to the needs of mega industries coming up in the state but also help generate employment opportunities.

Currently, the state has six government-run engineering colleges, 13 polytechnic and 24 industrial training institutes.

Steps will be taken to improve the standard of teaching and provide sophisticated equipment to the institutes with assistance from World Bank and big industries.

Training will also be imparted to graduates of technical institutions for a period of six months to upgrade their skills. In the next four years, 10,000 youths will be trained in advanced technology as part of the skill upgradation programme.

The government will provide land for a central tool room at Rayagada to cater to the needs of ancillary units to come up at Sunabeda and neighbouring areas. A branch of Central Institute of Plastic Engineering & Technology will also be opened there.
