nitty-gritty
- delicious fare at a price

Mention food and the first thing that comes to one?s mind are the delicious dishes whipped up by granny and ma at home.

For all those away from the comforts of home there is little option but to sustain oneself with food available in various outlets scattered across the city.

For those who consider home cooked meals second only to oxygen, and cannot do without it, there is good news. For students, homesick corporate honchos and aged people who are unable to cook a daily meal, there are options to chose from.

For all those with an appetite for home made Bengali cuisine, Aparna Roy could be the right person to contact. She has been taking care of the taste buds of many since the past five years. She cooks at home and gets it delivered to the given address. Food can either be ordered on a monthly basis or on a daily basis. People interested in her home cooked lunches will have to contact her day in advance. But she only serves lunch. Non-vegetarian lunch would cost you a mere Rs 27, while vegetarian can be ordered for Rs 22 only, by people who want it on a monthly basis. For those who wish to get only for a single day, the rate goes up to Rs 32. A weekday non-vegetarian lunch would mostly consist of rice, pulses, two vegetable curries made delicious with either a fish or an egg curry, depending on the choice of the person ordering food.

Address: Gangotri Complex, Kadma, Jamshedpur. Phone no 2306683.

For those curious about Parsi food, here is the place that will quench the thirst for great food. Hormazd M. Mehta has been attending to the culinary quests of people for quite sometime now. Not only lunch, but dinner, too, may be ordered here. People can get their food delivered on all days of the month and on special occasions. Ideally a non-vegetarian lunch would consist of plain rice, pulses, salad, chicken or mutton dhansak, mutton or chicken kebab, one vegetable curry and six chappatis, all for a nominal rate of Rs 60. For the vegetarian lunch available at Rs 45 per plate, mouth-watering vegetarian kebabs replace the mutton kebabs and dhansak gets dropped, with other dishes remaining the same. Dinner usually is a simpler affair with either mutton or chicken curry made with potato slices. To go along with it is a mutton cutlet and either a dish of egg and potato slices or tomato with eggs. With it there are 10 chappatis. This will set you back for Rs 60.

Address: Hormazd D. Mehta, Straight Mile Road, near Parsi Fire Temple, Jamshedpur. Phone no. 2431465.

Meet Malti Patel who has been serving Gujarati food eight years now. With her, people can order a simple lunch and dinner or get a conventional serve of delicious theplas, dhoklas and khamdis all at very nominal rates. A usual vegetarian lunch would include rice or chappatis, sweet pulses, two vegetable curries and a choice of papad, pickle or salad. Dinner consists of similar items with more number of chappattis in addition to the usual menu. For all those interested in getting the traditional Gujarati items exclusively on special occasions can place their orders but that has to be done at least a day in advance. Address: Malti Patel D-3, Danish Apartment, Dhatkidih, Jamshedpur. Phone no 2220025.
