Jamshedpur, Oct. 13: Erratic traffic and rash driving during puja has claimed at least half-a-dozen lives in and around the steel city, leaving marks of gloom in the festivity.
On National Highway 33, at Chaulibasa under Chandil police station area, two persons were killed after a trailed ran over them on October 11.
The deceased, Umapada Singh (22) and Nimai Mahto (25), were coming to the steel city for celebrating puja when the mishap took place.
According to sources, the speeding trailer, which was coming from Jamshedpur and sped away towards Ranchi, left the duo in a pool of blood. Passers-by rescued them and rushed them to the Medical College Hospital where they were declared dead.
In another incident, a 37-year-old man, Ravindra Nath Ghosh, was fatally injured as a 407 Tata truck hit him on October 11. A resident of Sidhgora, Ghosh was admitted to the Tata Main Hospital where he succumbed to the next day.
However, the police could not say when or how the truck knocked Ghosh down.
In yet another incident, one Bongo Majhi was fatally injured after falling from a moving jeep somewhere in Mango on the night of October 11. A resident of Kuchai, Majhi was admitted to the MGM Medical College Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries next morning.
Like other victims, Majhi was also on his way to take part in puja festivities along with his family and friends when the mishap took place.
Apart from these fatal road mishaps, two persons were electrocuted in separate incidents and later died at the Tata Main Hospital?s burn care unit.
Bibhishan Dhivar (24) was fatally burnt while lighting a puja pandal in Purulia district on October 10. A profusely burnt Dhivar was rushed to the Tata Main Hospital where he succumbed to his burns on Thursday.
In another incident of electrocution, 35-year-old Ramadhar Yadav was electrocuted while replacing a damaged wire in his residence under the RIT police station limits on October 12.
Soon after the mishap, Yadav was rushed to the TMH?s burn care unit where he succumbed to his burns today.
One middle school teacher, Anjani Kumar was grievously injured when a speeding Indica car hit him at Mango mufassil police station area today.
A resident of Kadma, the victim has been admitted to the MGM Medical College Hospital, where his condition is described as critical.
Cases of minor injuries also poured in at the Tata Main Hospital and other hospitals during the past two days. Most of those who had rushed to the hospitals had their hands or legs broken due to road mishaps.
In Tata Main Hospital, one Utpal Kumar was admitted with multiple injuries. A resident of Sakchi, his bike had skidded.
Similarly, a Vijay Kumar Nageswar got his ribs broken because of a road mishap. In yet another incident, one Sanjay Kumar was admitted to the Tata Main Hospital with head injuries.
Sources in the traffic police pointed out that only major mishaps were reported to the police and the minor ones have gone unreported.
