Jamiat plan hits hurdle

Sept. 25: The Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind?s attempt to cobble together a political alliance of 13 minority organisations in Assam has hit a roadblock with at least one major Muslim organisation warning of communal tension if the campaign continues.

The Ahele Sunnant-al-Jamat, which is one of the major religious organisations of minorities in Assam, said the ?group of 13? would be making a major mistake if they carried out the plan.

Syed Junaid, president of the al-Jamat, told the media in Silchar that such a front ?would be retrograde and tantamount to committing hara-kiri? in a state as homogenous as Assam. ?It will only lead to communalism,? he said.
