Agartala civic poll date set for December

Agartala, Sept. 25: The Tripura government is preparing to organise elections to the Agartala Municipal Council and the 12 nagar panchayats in the state in the second week of December.

The preparations have been set in motion with the preponing of exams in schools located in the areas and the construction and repair of roads, drains and buildings.

The government has also issued appointment offers in keeping with its commitment in the state budget wherein it promised to give 3,000 new jobs and appoint 382 subject teachers to higher secondary schools.

Official sources here said the government was planning to clear at least seven of the 15 outstanding instalments of dearness allowance for the 1.5 lakh employees in the government, public sector undertakings and autonomous bodies.

?Major announcements will be made in the monsoon session of the Assembly, beginning September 30,? a source said.

State election commissioner G.S.G. Ayengar said the dates for the election have not been finalised but preparations are under way.

He said the draft electoral roll for the polls would be published tomorrow but there would be no claim and objection as the draft rolls would be based on the rolls published on January 1 this year.

?The terms of the municipal council and nagar panchayats expire on December 26 and the new councils will take over on December 27, hence the elections have to be held in December,? Ayengar said.

He added that permission has been sought from the Election Commission to use electronic voting machines.

However, since the state election commission has not yet published the document on delimitation, the issue continues to hang in balance.
