Gogoi meets panel
Assam
chief minister Tarun Gogoi on Thursday met members of the
Prime Minister?s high-level committee constituted to prepare
a report on the status of Muslims in the state. Gogoi informed
the committee of the steps taken by his government to uplift
the status of Muslims in all spheres.
Murder probe
The Justice K.N. Saikia commission of inquiry, appointed by the Assam government to probe secret killings during 1998-2001, will now investigate the alleged attempted murder of Ananta Kalita of Hajo during the same period.
Road revamp
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs on Thursday approved a proposal to develop 7,639 km of roads in the Northeast at a cost of Rs 12,123 crore in three phases.
Village council
Meghalaya governor M.M. Jacob has stressed the need to set up village councils to handle development work. He was speaking at a workshop on local governance in Shillong on Wednesday.
Policy hailed
The Finer has welcomed the liberalisation of the Northeast Industrial Policy 1997 by the Centre.
Section 144
The Ri Bhoi district magistrate has promulgated Section 144 in Killing village, prohibiting operations like stone quarrying and stone crushing which lead to destruction of the ecology.
Progress plea
Assam governor Lt Gen. (retd) Ajai Singh has urged DoNER minister P.R. Kyndiah to focus on underdeveloped areas in the state like Karbi Anglong and North Cachar Hills.
Power forum
The Lower Assam Electricity Distribution Company Limited now has a forum for redressal of grievances. It shall receive complaints forwarded to or filed with it in writing.
Liquor seized
The enforcement staff of the Meghalaya excise department has seized 32 litres of illicit liquor in a raid conducted at Polo municipal market in Shillong. Nine persons were arrested.
